🧳 What to Pack for Iceland in Summer

(Clothing & Essentials)

Iceland’s summer weather is famously unpredictable—and that’s part of its magic. Expect daytime temperatures in the high 50s°F to 70’s, nighttime lows in the mid-50s°F, with the possibility of  wind, rain, and even a touch of snow. (snow has never happened but you never know). There is no bad weather in Iceland.. there is just bad clothing choices!!

The key to staying comfortable is layering.

We strongly recommend wool (socks, base layers, undershirts, long underwear). Wool keeps you warm even when wet and regulates temperature beautifully. Your down jacket will not work in Iceland.

💡 Helpful tip: The sun rises early and sets very late or basically the sun never really sets—pack an eye mask and ear plugs for restful sleep.

🐎 Horse Riding Gear

Can I bring my own riding gear?
Yes—but all riding gear must be thoroughly disinfected to comply with Iceland’s strict biosecurity policies. Please review official guidelines carefully before packing.

If you have questions about boots or equipment, please talk with Colleen before the retreat.

🥾 Clothing for Hiking & Riding

We won’t be doing long hikes every day, but you can step right outside the farm and hike anytime. You’ll also want gear that works well on horseback.

Please bring:

  • Wool T-shirts or tank tops (great for both warm and cold weather)

  • Waterproof rain jacket and maybe rain pants if you like them (essential!)

  • Warm insulated jacket

  • Layering pieces (non-cotton, moisture-wicking)

  • Very warm hat that goes under the helmet or a buff can work (yes, really warm!)

  • Gloves

  • Horse Riding pants with full seat, 3 pairs because they will get wet and dirty.

💧 Water Bottles

  • Bring a small water bottle you can carry on horse rides and hikes. You can get this at any store in town.

  • On horseback, you can use the small plastic bottles stored in the saddle bags with your lunch.

  • Bottles can be refilled from streams and springs—the drinking water in Iceland is some of the cleanest in the world
👉 Please never buy bottled water in Iceland

👕 Laundry

Laundry is simple and rustic:

  • Hand-wash clothes in the sink

  • Expect to get a little  dirty—the horses don’t mind

  • We hang wet clothes by the heaters at the farm

  • Everything dries by the next day, and the dirt usually falls right off

👢 Shoes

Please bring:

  • Riding boots with a heel (not cowboy boots)

    • We will be riding English style

    • Check with Colleen if you’re unsure about your boots

  • Hiking shoes or running shoes

  • Flip flops or sandals for hot springs and pools

  • Comfortable shoes for around the guesthouse
