Things to Consider:

The weather in Iceland is unpredictable. Think high 50’s for the high and mid 40’s for the low. Strong winds are possible as well as rain and snow. Make sure the pack waterproof rain gear as well as well as warmer base layers. We always recommend wool (socks, undershirts and long underwear) as it keeps you warm even when wet. You may also want to bring an eye mask. The sun will rise early and set late. There will be curtains in our room, but we recommend bringing one just in case!

Can I bring my own horse riding gear?

Icelandic Horses are not vaccinated and therefore are susceptible to pathogens coming in from other countries. Iceland has strict guidelines to protect their native horses. New unused riding gear is acceptable but if there is any question about whether the item has been used outside of Iceland with horses or about how “new” the item is, it is ideal to get a A certificate of disinfection, issued by an authorized veterinary officer.  If you want to bring your own gear.. wash it.. wash it.. wash it!!!!

Contact your local veterinary office to determine the process for your needs. In general it needs to be washed in 40°C/104°F temperature water, dry-cleaned or disinfected before arriving in Iceland. You will present the certificate at customs. If a certificate of disinfection by a foreign authority is not presented, the gear must be disinfected on arrival at the owner’s expense It is very important to note: Used leather riding gear may not be brought into the country.
