Jacqueline Stanford

Jacqueline Stanford was born on a farm in Western Canada where she grew up with her parents and 3 older brothers. As a kid, she was involved in all sports, competing mostly with her brothers and male cousins.

During her high school and college days, she competed in flat water kayaking, white water kayaking and basketball – all at a national level.

After graduating college she was bitten by the travel bug which landed her on several solo adventures throughout Europe and Tahiti. Arriving in Los Angeles from her travels in Tahiti with no way to get back to Calgary, Canada, she decided to buy a bike and cycle home – a mere 2500 miles (having never ridden more than 5 miles). Loving the sport, she continued long tours and eventually ended up on the Canadian National Cycling Team. Between teaching high school math and PE, she decided to try the Ironman. Again, never training for the swim or run, she won her first triathlon (1/2 Ironman in Santa Barbara) and then headed for the Hawaii Ironman. After the bike, she was in first place (by 20 minutes – bike record held until several years ago) but died in the run – but still was in the top 20. At this event, a sponsor saw her and offered her a sponsorship to become a professional triathlete – FANTASTIC!!

Once a pro, she started doing and winning triathlons all over the planet ranking in the top 5 in the world. Some notable ones are the Maui Triathlon where she won overall, beating all the men, the Worlds Toughest and many more. She also competed in the first Tour de France for Women on the Canadian National team.

After retiring, she married and had 2 FANTASTIC kids. Jacqueline is now a renowned potter with many Galleries and shows carrying her Horse Hair and functional pottery. She is also works for a non profit and is a yoga instructor. But she loves Women’s Quest where she has been on staff for the last 30 years.

Thorlaug

I am 61 years old and have a husband and 3 grown up kids. I am born and raised in Reykjavík, from a family of 10 and my parents had horses, so I have been riding since I was 5 years old.

I played handball when I was young and I am a sporty person.  I like to swim, do yoga, go to the gym, bicycle and my passion is hiking. I have been hiking in the mountains and highlands of Iceland the last decades.

I am an adventures person andI have lived in America, Denmark and Belgium for a few years, aswell as worked summerjobs in Norway, Sweden and Faroe Islands as a teenager. I speak english, danish, faroe islandish and am studying french at the moment. I like all of these countries, but most of all I love Iceland.

I am very interested in people and love to get to know knew people. This had led me to work as a physical therapist for over 30 years and a tour guide and ranger the last 10 years.  I have mainly been guiding during summertime, hiking trips where there is yoga combined, in the highlands and in the remote areas in Westfjords.

I love nature and know Iceland pretty well, aswell as its history, fauna and flora. I love to introduce Iceland to others and partisipate in the joy and appreciation they exsperience.

I am a bookworm, (as we say in icelandic for someone who reads a lot), I like to cook, to knit, play cards, listen to music and watch movies and series. I like playing with kids and animals, aswell as grownups.

I always have in my backpack  some dry fish and chocolate. I like to go swimming in the ocean or lakes in various locations.
